It Is Not About Where You Start II

I was opportune to listen to Dr. Cosmas Maduka of Coscharis Motors and I just couldn’t help write this article with this heading. In the first part of this series, I talked about Pep Guardiola’s rise from ignominy to stardom and the lessons learnt were powerful. I am sure the story of Dr. Maduka will show a lot of people we all can start small and grow big.

Dr. maduka lost his father at age four and he, along with three siblings, were left to the care of their mother. He couldn’t get so much education because his mother cum grandparents couldn’t afford to pay for his education. He dropped out at primary four or 4th grade as others will call it.

Maduka came to Lagos to become an apprentice under his Uncle, who sell spare parts. He had to endure a lot of hardship while doing this. His greatest joy was that he encountered Jesus during his apprenticeship years and this changed his life a lot.

After serving his uncle for several years, the young Maduka was given two hundred Naira as compensation. Though painful, he promised his Uncle that he would turn that seed money into a multi-million empire in years to come, a promise he kept to and has fulfilled. Coscharis Group is now worth billions of Naira today.

A lot of people could have looked at that little money and begin to curse the day they came under such a “wicked” uncle. They will begin to come up with reasons they couldn’t rise up the ladder of success in life.

Instead of focusing on what he didn’t have or his limitations, Maduka decided to turn his disadvantage into opportunities. He started small, was industrious and started making something out of his nothing.

A little while after his marriage, Maduka lost all he had after he invested in goods that later turned to be fake. He went crashing to level zero but he never gave up trying to rise up again. He did a lot of menial jobs like carrying about weighing balance for people to know their weight, “Check Your Weight.” He was being paid ten kobo then. These were trying times but the determination to succeed didn’t leavehim.

Since he didn’t resign to fate, he got someone to loan him some money and that changed his life forever. He got involved in some businesses and he started making profits that helped him grow his business. From then on, it was from one expansion to another until the Coscharis Group got to the height it is today.

I have always believed anyone can rise to the highest level no matter where he/she starts from. This story and so many others have lent credence to this belief. If you can see a glorious vision and set goals to get there, no matter where you start from, you will surely get there.

Success does not know the background you are coming from. It becomes the exclusive property of those who know what they want and how to get what they want. With strong will and the grace of God, you can become whatever you want to become.
