As a young graduate, I picked up a book by Robert Kiyosaki called Rich Dad, Poor Dad and one very important advice I got from that book is MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS! Kiyosaki devoted a section of the book to entrepreneurship and reasons people should MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS.

A few years ago, I returned to my impoverished village in Haiti. Many in the village came to see me—the tiny and diseased child they didn’t expect to make it. Some of them used to call me Souyen and kokobay—words that mean “crippled.” A man from the village, Alfred, reminded the people how they treated me. “Today” He said, “He returns as our village hero.”

I am sure you, too, may already be a village hero in your own way. In my case, it was the final result of personal responsibility, and a combination of strategies that prompted Alfred to call me a “Village Hero.” Let me share five of those strategies with you:

“Whosoever has conquered fear has conquered failure.”

Fear is a powerful word that has stopped a lot of people from living a meaningful life. So many dreams have been aborted just because of fear and so many people are living below their potentials because of this same fear.

To achieve so much in life, fear has to be dealt with on all fronts. The truth is that we are all fearful at one stag of our lives, but the difference between the successful and the failures in life, is that some people used their fear as a spring board to achieve great things in life while the other group, allowed their fears to be an obstacle to achieving their dreams.

Some days back, I had the opportunity of speaking with a lady and ever since I have not been able to erase the lessons I learnt that day from my memory. I just couldn’t believe all I heard that precious night because it was like a story of impossibility. After listening to the lady’s story, I promised myself I will have to share the story with everyone I know. I have shared it with my fiancee and she was as dazed as I was afterwards.

The story of Ali in the classic, Acres of Diamond is one that has refused to clear from my memory ever since I read the story. Dr. Russell Cornwell, did a yeoman job by painting in stories the lives of the ordinary people whom greatness is within their grasp but couldn’t just smell it talk less of grabbing it.
