When I got out of the University in 2002, I declared to my folks that the most important thing to me is my dream. I told everyone that cares to listen that I am not enthusiastic on working for somebody else; I desire to set my sail.

Most people that heard my declaration never took me serious. They told me I was only joking that it wasn’t possible for a young man to leave the University and never bother to look for a job. I was like a jester to all of them. It was not just comprehensible for them.

When it was time to go out and get a job and they noticed I was serious about my decision, so many advices started flying in from left, right and center. I heard words like: “Look, I am older than you, I have been in this world before you and I know what is fit for you to do.” Such words were coming in torrents from different sources.

After hearing so many of these sermons, I still decided to listen to my heart. My heart is made up to follow my dream and those pep talks didn’t move me a bit. Some of these elders were shocked when they found out their “advices” weren’t moving me. I was labeled all sorts of names and yet I didn’t bulk. :) I have made up my mind and no dissuasion could make me change it.

It got to a point that things were very tough for me and these people were watching if I will change my mind. My mum will always tell me to stop wasting my life and go get a job but all I answer is: “time will tell.” She is always laughing whenever I say this.

It is going to four years that I started working, ACTIVELY, on my dreams and things have really changed. Those who were looking at how I will end up are now getting impressed by my tenacity and the little I have been able to achieve. I have been able to author two books, both self published and one coming out in hard copy very soon.

I have also met a lot of wonderful people along the way, people I wouldn’t have come in contact with if I had not taken the decision to follow my dream back then. To cap it all up, I am a role model to a lot of people and I now teach them the important lessons I have learnt while following my dreams.

My question to you is this: “Have you listened to others to your detriment?” So many people have abandoned their heart desires just to please others. What I discovered then was that all the people telling me to forget about my dreams, couldn’t see what I was seeing so there was no way I could use their advice.

You can be disobedient if it is going to be worthwhile to you. Nobody knows what you want in life more than you, so you have to be careful who you listen because this will definitely have a HUGE impact in who/what you turn out to be years to come.
